Distinctive in appearance, with a bluish or greyish body, sporting spots ranging from light yellow to bright red, males are more brightly coloured than females. They have large eyes are brown to greenish brown and can be orange or yellow with a vertical slit pupil. Typical lifespan for the tokay is 7-10 years, however in captivity some Tokays have been known to live over 18 years.
Male Tokays are very territorial, and will attack anything else in their territory. Tokays are solitary and only meet during the mating season.

The Association of Reptilian and Amphibian Veterinarians (ARAV) is an international veterinary organization promoting conservation and humane treatment of all reptilian and amphibian species through education, captive breeding, and habitat preservation.
