Q: Can feeder animals transmit diseases or parasites to me or my animals?
A: Yes, rodents in general are common carriers of sometimes fatal diseases such as the hantavirus and parasites such as rodent mites. Your exposure to these diseases and parasites can be greatly reduced when your feeder animals are obtained from a reputable breeder and by never feeding wild caught feeder animals. At RodentPro.com, we take extra precautions to produce healthy and virus free feeder animals. We monitor their health via laboratory testing to ensure you receive a premium quality, problem free feeder animal. In addition, feeding frozen feeder animals will greatly reduce the risk of transmission of mites and disease pathogens to you and your pet.
Q: How do you euthanize your feeder animals?
A: We use Carbon dioxide (CO2), as recommended by the American Veterinary Medical Association panel on euthanasia, as the agent to euthanize our feeder animals. CO2 not only ensures a humane, quick and painless death for the animals but also ensures that no harmful residual chemicals remain that may harm the animal ingesting the prey item.
Q: How are your feeder animals packed?
A: Our feeder animals are frozen individually to avoid frozen "blocks" of rodents and then packaged in 4mm thick resealable commercial freezer bags with your convenience in mind.
Q: Do you offer a discreetly labeled box, I.E. frozen meat as opposed to frozen rodents?
A: Yes, We can ship in a box labeled frozen meat by requesting this option in the customer comment section when placing your order.
Q: How long will the frozen feeder animals last in the freezer?
A: Depending on how they are stored, most frozen feeder animals can last up to a year. It is a good idea to minimize any exposure to air by ensuring they are in air tight freezer bags. While we recommend not storing feeder animals without fur for more than 4 or 6 months and feeder animals with fur for 9 to 12 months, if properly sealed containers are used and air exposure is kept to a minimum, they can be kept for much longer.
Q: How do I thaw out the frozen feeder animals?
A: It is important to only offer fully defrosted prey items as a food source. We recommend a slow room temperature thawing process. We discourage a rapid thawing process utilizing means of high heat such as a microwave or hot water, as this method often distorts the physical integrity of the food item. Warming the food item to slightly above room temperature is acceptable. This slight warming can be achieved by placing the food item in a clean plastic bag and floating it in luke warm water. This slight warming will make the food item smell more strongly, and thus more attractive, which may be especially important when feeding reluctant feeders. Q: How do you convert an animal that is used to feeding on live prey items to frozen (prekilled) prey items?
A: When converting an animal to prekilled prey, try "tease feeding" it by dangling the food item in front of it with a pair of hemostats. Be prepared for the strike and quickly release the prey. If this technique does not work you may first try offering stunned live prey, followed by freshly killed prey and then eventually by offering thawed food items. Q: How do you entice non rodent-eaters to feed on rodents?
A: When converting a non-rodent eater to feeding on rodents you should try to "scent" the rodent by rubbing the normally fed food item of the animal on to the rodent to try to entice them into eating it. Another method is to use a sharp object to puncture the brain case of the prekilled food item. The scent may attract an otherwise reluctant animal into feeding. A: At a temperature of -109.3º F, dry ice is a skin irritant and it is crucial that you use gloves to handle it. Avoid contact with skin, mouth, eyes and clothing as severe frostbite or burns may result. Dry ice is harmful if eaten or swallowed. Dry ice produces carbon dioxide gas as it sublimates (melts). Do not place dry ice in air-tight containers as they may explode. Only use dry ice in open or well ventilated areas, as use in poorly ventilated areas can result in a lack of oxygen (suffocation) causing serious injury or death. |
